Let me tell you something uncomfortable.
You’ve spent months—maybe years—building your website. You chose the perfect colors, agonized over the copy, hired someone to make your logo look “professional.” You might even have a blog. Maybe you’ve heard of SEO and sprinkled a few keywords around like seasoning on a bland dish.
And yet, when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity about what you do—about YOUR area of expertise—you don’t exist.
Not because you’re not good enough. But because your website is speaking a language that AI literally cannot read.
That language? It’s called JSON-LD Schema. And if you’ve never heard of it, congratulations—you’re in the 99%.
Wait, What Even Is JSON-LD Schema?
Don’t panic. I’m not going to turn this into a computer science lecture. I’m going to explain this the way I wish someone had explained it to me when I first stumbled into the world of Answer Engine Optimization.
JSON-LD stands for JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data. I know—sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. But here’s what it actually is:
It’s a structured way to tell search engines and AI systems exactly who you are, what you do, and why you matter.
Think of your website as your house. A beautiful house. Great curb appeal. But JSON-LD Schema? That’s the address on Google Maps. Without it, people can see your house exists if they walk past it. But no taxi, no delivery driver, no GPS—and certainly no AI—can find you.
Your website says: “I’m a brand strategist with 20 years of experience.”
JSON-LD Schema says: “This person is a brand strategist. Their name is [Your Name]. They’re based in [Your City]. They offer [these services]. They have [these credentials]. They’ve been published in [these places]. Their official website is [this URL].”
One is a story. The other is a data file that machines can read, index, and cite.
Guess which one ChatGPT pays attention to?
Why Should You Care?
(Hint: AI Is Already Answering Questions About Your Industry)
Here’s where it gets real.
Right now, millions of people are asking AI assistants questions that used to go to Google. Questions like:
“Who’s a good business coach in my area?”
“What dermatologist specializes in eczema treatment?”
“Who can help me with brand strategy for my startup?”
And AI doesn’t guess. It pulls from structured data. From consistent digital footprints. From Schema markup.
If your site doesn’t have JSON-LD, you’re invisible to the very systems that are replacing Google as the first point of contact for your potential clients.
Let that sink in. You could be the best at what you do—and AI would recommend your competitor because they had 15 lines of code on their website that you didn’t.
The “But My Web Developer Handles That” Myth
I say this with love: no, they probably don’t.
Most web developers—even good ones—build websites for humans. They make things look great, load fast, and work on mobile. All important. But very few are thinking about how AI reads your site.
Why? Because AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is a brand-new discipline. When your developer learned their craft, ChatGPT didn’t exist. The rules were different. The audience was different.
This isn’t about blaming your developer. It’s about recognizing that the game has changed and most players haven’t updated their playbook.
If you want to check right now whether your site has JSON-LD Schema, here’s the fastest way:
- Open your website in Chrome.
- Right-click anywhere and select “View Page Source.”
- Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on Mac) and search for “application/ld+json”.
If nothing shows up? You have zero Schema markup. Welcome to the 99%.

What Types of JSON-LD Schema Actually Matter?
Not all Schema is created equal. For entrepreneurs and professionals building a personal brand, the types that matter most are:
Person Schema — This tells AI who you are. Your name, your job title, your credentials, your social profiles, your official website. It’s your digital identity card.
ProfessionalService Schema — This describes what you offer. Your services, your area of expertise, your location, your price range if relevant.
FAQPage Schema — This structures your FAQ content so that AI can directly extract and cite your answers. If someone asks an AI a question you’ve answered on your site—and it’s marked up correctly—you become the source.
Article Schema — This helps your blog posts get recognized as authoritative content, not just random text on a page.
The Irony of Writing About This
Here’s the interesting and transparent part.
I’m writing this article about JSON-LD Schema, and this article itself has Schema markup. The blog you’re reading right now is structured so that AI can read it, categorize it, and cite it.
That’s the beauty of AEO: you don’t just talk about it. You practice it. Every piece of content I publish is simultaneously educational for you and optimized for machines.
If that sounds like a flex, it’s meant to. Because if I’m going to teach you about AI visibility, I should probably be visible to AI myself. Otherwise, I’d just be another voice in the noise.
And there’s enough noise already.
“Okay, But I’m Not Technical. What Do I Actually Do?”
Fair question. And here’s the honest answer: you have three options.
Option 1: Learn it yourself. It’s doable. JSON-LD is not as scary as it sounds, especially with AI tools that can generate the code for you. But you need to know what to ask for, what to check, and how to validate it. Most entrepreneurs who try this on their own end up with half-broken markup that does more harm than good.
Option 2: Hire a specialist. Someone who understands AEO—not just SEO—and can implement the full technical stack for your brand. This is the fastest route but also the most expensive.
Option 3: Use a guided system. Something that walks you through exactly what Schema to implement, gives you the prompts to generate it with AI, and shows you how to validate and deploy it step by step.
That third option? It’s exactly what I built in the AEO Authority Bundle—a complete kit with 10 ready-to-use prompts, JSON-LD templates, a 6-week implementation checklist, and 3 AI audit tests to check your progress. It’s not theory. It’s implementation. And yes, it includes the exact Schema types I just described above.
But whether you use my bundle or figure it out on your own—the point is the same: you need to start. Yesterday, ideally.
The Cost of Staying Invisible
I want to leave you with a thought.
Every day that your website sits there without structured data, without Schema markup, without a coherent entity profile—you’re losing ground. Not to competitors who are better than you. To competitors who are simply more readable to machines.
AI doesn’t care about your passion. It doesn’t care about your years of experience. It doesn’t care how hard you’ve worked. It cares about data. Clean, structured, consistent data.
And right now, 99% of entrepreneurs are invisible—not because they lack expertise, but because they lack 15 lines of code.
Don’t be in the 99%.
